The History of SIOR Inspirational Breakfast

The year was 1974. SIOR was still known as SIR. National offices were at 925 15th Street NW in Washington, DC. And the national SIR president was Howard “Blackie” Krafsur from Chicago.  Two spiritually-oriented SIRs who up until then didn’t know each other, were introduced by a third-party conference caller. This phone call led to the very first SIR Prayer Breakfast, held on April 27, 1974 during the convention in Kansas City. Twelve members attended.

The power of prayer, of inspiration, and of fellowship was not to be denied. The SIR Prayer Breakfast, open to members and spouses of all faiths, took off like a rocket. By 1977, the original dozen attendees had grown to 225.  In most cases, the speakers were SIRs who discussed how belief in Jesus had changed their business and personal lives. However, more and more non-SIR inspirational speakers began to grace the Prayer Breakfast dais. They included Senator Mark Hatfield (R-OR), Anita Bryant, Bob Harrington; the Chaplain of Bourbon Street, Fritz Peterson of the New York Yankees and numerous other well-known sports and political figures over the years.

In the last four decades, the Prayer Breakfast (which changed its name to the SIOR Prayer Breakfast in 1986, following the renaming of Society of Industrial Realtors to the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors) has continued to grow, thrive, and prosper. We’re proud of our storied past, but the best is truly yet to come.

Sometimes, one phone call can change the course of history.
